Galactooligosaccharide (GOS) is a natural functional oligosaccharide with a molecular structure typically consisting of galactose or glucose molecules connected to 1-7 Gal units. In nature, trace amounts exist in animal milk, with higher concentrations in breast milk. The establishment of infant Bifidobacterium flora depends largely on the GOS ingredients found in breast milk. Galacto-oligosaccharide is one of the few substances that can be effectively utilized by human intestinal bacteria.
